Seems like all output from running java.exe from CMD goes to stderr. All OS/2 apps have always sent output to stdout, and that is what all OS/2 tools expect. Previous Java versions did the same ! EX: (I want to know how to use Java:) Java.exe -? | more ...everything scrolls out of screen ... :-( We need Java6 to have OS/2 personality, as all other OS/2 apps - and all previous JAVA versions. |

as it's fixed by the dev, i close that bug. we don't have the time to look at all stuff and are glad devs also fix their app. If we're going this way it will be over sooner than later. Its a bug in our OpenJDK and it should be fixed. There are more programs which have same behavior, but I didn't report it because its the same problem. So its not only JGraphite and not all developers are so kind to fix something for just OS/2-eCS. |

3DMatrix version 1.6 does run on Java 1.4.2, but doesn't run on Java 1.6.0-b22 WSE. Didn't try version 1.5.009 because log shows similar results as with JCad. Enclosed (renamed) log file from program. I used this command file for starting up; @echo off rem Java 1.4.2 SET JAVA_HOME=i:\JAVA\JAVA142 set BEGINLIBPATH=i:\JAVA\JAVA142\bin set path=i:\JAVA\JAVA142\bin rem @echo off rem Java 1.5.009 rem SET JAVA_HOME=i:\JAVA\JAVA150 rem set BEGINLIBPATH=i:\JAVA\JAVA150\bin rem @echo off rem Java 1.6.0 rem set BEGINLIBPATH=i:\JAVA\JAVA160\bin rem set path=i:\JAVA\JAVA160\bin I: cd I:\CAD\3DMatrix java -Xmx300m -jar 3dmatrix.jar I can remove or add rem statements to make a Java version active. This on is from Java 1.4.2, the others seems not to work and give an error log. I run eCS 1.2 Dutch with 1Gb memory, enough diskspace 3DMatrix can be downloaded from www.digitalscores.com/3dmatrix/downloads.html |

According to SmartCache?, "Most browsers are configured to open 4 connections to the server. 30 connections should be enough for 6 simultaneous users.". Yet, this Java proxy runs out of connections really fast under Java 1.60. Goldencode Java 1.41 and Innotek 1.42 do not have this problem. I think the issue is that certain advertising links are blocked by Ghostery (a FireFox? add-on) or re-directed to the Hosts file and those connections are never released or released too slowly by Java 1.60. I can surf the Internet for 20 minutes-ish then the connection limit is reached. Symptoms include
I've included the two SmartCache? .cnf files that I changed. Smartcache 0.93 is also included. InitJava?.cmd is used to restart Java. |

After certain testing TVBrowser (3.0 RC3) (http://www.tvbrowser.org/) works so far. Unfortunately the settings window do not appear in the correct size. Control-buttons (like "OK") are only visible after window resize by hand. This bug is probably not related to RC-Status of TVBrowser. It does not occur under WinXP-Java. See also the attached pictures. |

After having installed the latest odin-release the wps doesn't start anymore, i. e. freezes immediately after having visualized the background colour and mousepointer. A restore of the system configuration doesn't help (using robosave), I needed to restore the complete os/2 directory (what does the installation routine?). The problem is reproduceable with all the newer odin releases. Any hint? Sincerely, Harald |

Back in June when I started to test the latest Java, I found several installer requiring entries into the Registry that pointed to the new Java, or they would not work. So I copied via USB thumb drive the Registry entries from a Windows 7 machine, to text on the OS/2 machine. Then I edited out the obvious Windows only statements and manually added to the Registry. I'm going to quote the entire entry as you'll need something like it for the WPI installer: For JRE only: [HKEY_CLASSES_ROOT]

------------ done ---------
However, I initially used the version string 1.6.0-b22 (carried forward Windows' version string). Only later when an application complained, did I do Java --version to discover that the correct string was 1.6.0-ga-b22. When I went back to make this correction in the Registry on October 6, did ALL Java 1.6 applications became trash with all frames and dialogs stretched vertically from top of screen to bottom with no text. In chasing the solution to this, I reinstalled Odin, Java 1.6, and did several other system maintenance tasks. To no avail did any fix the problem, until I moved Java 1.6 to a different volume. Then everything resumed normal function. So I can conclude that one or more of the paths with the version string is the cause. I seem to remember that you had a bug that you fixed with symptom of dialogs with nothing within, think this may be related. I have not corrected the paths in the Registry to point to the new location, yet, and am leery to do so. BTW, only you know the correct information that is needed in the Registry. |

Currently sound seem to be implemented in exclusive mode only. This is very annoying, as Java apps that only outputs sound now and then, blocks all other OS/2 apps from playing any sound, as long as Java app is running. We need shared mode for Java - either as standard or as an option. Could be by CMD line switch or an enviroment variable. |

First thing after booting, I started and then closed Firefox (10.0.12). Then I tried to run TightVNC 2.6.2 Java app (get it here http://www.tightvnc.com/download.php) Although it used to run with eCS Java GA 4 and older, it has not been working well with GA5. Now it wouldn't open past the login screen. My desktop was frozen, the cursor became the VNC remote desktop point cursor. I used the C-A-D popup's TOP app to kill the Java process. After returning to my working desktop, I opened Firefox again to come to this page, to look for Java updates. At the same time I tried to check the Java -version in a 4OS2 window. The system immediately crashed to a black screen. NO messages in POPUPLOG.OS2. Rebooting required chkdsk on all my HPFS and JFS drives. After the reboot, I reproduced the issue with the VNC desktop, and the need to kill the JAVA process with TOP. I had also increased the virtual address limit from 1 GB to 2 GB, to see if it would help, no dice. My system is a 4GB RAM with 4-cores AMD Phenom II, 500 GB HDD, XFX AMD 1GB video. I run eCS 2.1 with Odin 0.8.9, Java GA5 (of course). Since JAVA is already at v. 7.17 for all other OS's, and all older Java versions are VERY unsafe, what is the prospect for a proper working, safe Java for eCS? Given that eCS is well outside the mainstream of OS's in browsers, media players, office apps, etc., incremental approaches releasing successive older versions of Java won't work. If it is not possible to proceed directly to the latest Java, isn't this the end of the road for OS/2-eCS? |

This task is to track re-enabling these components as we go and to eventually make sure that there are no OS2_TEMP ifdefs in the JDK makefiles which will mean all components applicable to OS/2 are enabled for building. |

Gerrit Schoenmaker (the reporter of ticket:43) did some more testing with iTrain and Drag & Drop and eventually he found that he has the DragText utility installed and it's the reason of the crash. If he disables DragText? the crash goes away and all works fine. Most likely, DragText? expects something from the drag source window or drop target window that Odin does not provide. One day we should investigate if it makes sense to add support for the DragText? enhanced DnD protocol to Odin/Java?. |

I am using versions 6.5.11 of SmartSVN (requiring Java 1.4.2) and 6.6.7 (requiring Java 1.6 -> this new version of Java) in VirtualBox?. The VirtualBox? host is Windows 7 running with a screen aspect ratio of 16/9 while the VirtualBox? guest is OS/2 running with a screen aspect ratio of 4/3.
1.) for SmartSVN 6.5.11 I can properly resize windows: maximizing the window will exactly fill the screen, sizing works as expected
2.) for SmartSVN 6.6.7 I cannot properly resize windows: maximizing the window will cover exactly the screen height but will exceed the screen width. I suspect it tries to scale screen width with a ratio of 16/9 where it should scale with 4/3 of the screen height. I also cannot size at all (even though the sizing pointer symbol is visible) and the window unfortunately is wider than the screen.
3.) both versions of SmartSVN properly work when running under native OS/2
Therefore, from the 3 components: |

I have noticed some swing applications are displayed with missing parts on eComStation, text data, for instance. This is an exemple of such application: http://www.receita.fazenda.gov.br/publico/programas/IRPF/2011/PGDIRPF2011/Java/zip/IRPF2011v1.0.zip I am attaching two snapshots: one taken when running this program on Windows and another running it on eComStation. Although it runs on eComStation, the missing text renders it unusable. |

I have now more applications which do something with sound. Both Laoe and Raven can't record because the application can't find a source. Also pulldown menu's don't reveal any choices other than "no sources" or similar text. From the developers of Raven I got the question "It would be good to know if OpenJDK 6 for OS/2 contains JavaSound?. Can you check on this? Does the GA version have a FULLY implemented JavaSound??. I hope the answer is "no", otherwise we have another problem on our hands, ie no choice of sources. |

I have two Java programs that won't work because the classpath statements are too long. I think that this is a command.exe bug, but it affects Java. The programs are Freemind 0.9.0 found at <http://freemind.sourceforge.net/> and Squirrel 3.2.1 found at <http://www.squirrelsql.org>. The only direct solution would be to use ./././., etc. in classpath to add all files in subdirectory of program directory, and subdirectories of the subdirectory, etc., or require us to switch to bash to run these programs. Adding levels of indirection would be an Odin feature. The following is the freemind cmd file: setlocal d: cd \OA\freemind set classpath=D:\OA\freemind\lib\freemind.jar;D:\OA\freemind\lib\forms-1.0.5.jar;D:\OA\freemind\lib\bindings.jar;D:\OA\freemind\lib\jibx\xpp3.jar;D:\OA\freemind\lib\jibx\jibx-run.jar;D:\OA\freemind\lib\SimplyHTML\SimplyHTML.jar;D:\OA\freemind\lib\SimplyHTML\gnu-regexp-1.1.4.jar;D:\OA\freemind\browser\freemindbrowser.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\help\help_plugin.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\help\jhall.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\script\scripting_plugin.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\script\groovy-all-1.5.6.jar; set SVG=D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-awt-util.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-bridge.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-css.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-dom.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-ext.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-extension.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-gui-util.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugin set SVG2=D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-squiggle.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-svg-dom.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-svggen.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-swing.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-transcoder.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-util.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-xml.jar; set SVG3=D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-gvt.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-parser.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\batik-script.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\js.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\pdf-transcoder.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\svg_plugin.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\xerces_2_5_0.jar;D:\OA\freemind\plugins\svg\xml-apis.jar; set Java_Home=j:\java6\jre j:\java6\jre\bin\java -Xms512M -Xmx512M -cp %SVG%;%SVG2%;%SVG3% freemind.main.FreeMindStarter? endlocal |

I try to run ProjectLibre? latest version in Java GA1 and Java GA3 in order to rule out development differences in Java, however behavior is same in both Java version. One time ProjectLibre? is just starting up, you can load a datafile. Sometimes it hangs there. Other times it won't start at all and produce a hs_err_pidXXX.log. I'm unsure if this is a Java problem or if this is a ProjectLibre? problem. If the latter istrue then I have to issue a ticket there. |

If I start it like: Java.exe -jar K:\java1\jeti2\Jeti2.jar App loads, but then fails l8r with some other problem. Looks like this Java 6 switches away from curdir, when it starts, and then can't find the app. No earlier versions (1.31 1.41 1.42) shows this behavior, when started same way. |

I wrote a small Java program (attached) to understand what time value is returned on my machine. What I expected (by setting TZ=GMT0) is that choosing UTC or GMT0 the time value woulds not be affected by DST (Daylight Saving Time). To my surprise it is affected. The output of 20130309 (DST not in effect) is OK. The output of 20130404 (DST in effect in Portugal but TZ=GMT0) is NOK because one hour is subtracted. I add a zip file with the output and program used. Can you explain this behavior and how to solve this? |

I'm not sure if you can do something with it, but its a report from JAlbum 9.5. I'm running eCS 1.2Dutch, available memory 1Gb. Enclosed the error file. It looks like its running okay, but at start all is upside down, starting something else will correct this. I'm not sure if this is with this Java version or with JAlbum, its since 9.4.1. So I'm more on the side of JAlbum for this, but the developer from JAbum says otherwise. |

I've got two computers that have problems. One AMD Quad Core (hasn't worked before either) and the Laptop Sony Vaio Intel Core i3. The latter used to work with Odin 0.8.7 + Java6 b25 and patches applied as it could run GenealogyJ 3. Now both computers show the same behavior, they stall and hang and the VIO output look faulty as parts of the text seem to be missing (Odin 0.8.7 + Java6 b25). The AMD based computer still reboot after a short while unless I use C-A-D and do a Hard kill. JDownload 0.9xyz as well as JDownload 2.x show both the same behaviour as GenealogyJ. Please do note that the Java installers for both GenealogyJ and JDownload 2.x work well, just as JDownload 0.9xyz itself work well (though slow) on an old single core machine here. Side note: Flash GA 0.4.0 is more unstable now, also cause reboots on the Laptop. Flash respond faster, but also cause sound to click like an old radio with push buttons, between each run and also if one tries to jump to another part of a flash clip. |

If *.jar -files are associated with java.exe or javaw.exe and a java program is started by double clicking some strange things happen. E.g Frostwire launches well but can't connect to internet. However using java -jar frostwire.jar makes it work. A cmd-file with the same expression works as well. There are also effects on other programs. Vbox, ecomarket, pmmaps don't launch. Pdf-merge launch an error message. They work again after reboot. PM123 launch an error message, and no new files can be loaded. However last loaded file can be "played", it isn't played but saved as *.wav. Turns out that the DART-plugin has "popped out". It can be reinserted only after a reboot. Those effects do not happen if a java program is run by commandline or a cmd-file. It should be said that the installed java is a wpi-pack from hobbes, but the content of openjdk is identical with build 22GA, except for an icon (java.ico). There are no additional entries in config.sys except for the SET JAVA_HOME=C:\openjdk6\ statement. The program object parameter is initially set to -jar %F , but the effect is the same for just -jar . The behaviour has been confirmed by another person, see this thread in os2world.com forum http://www.os2world.com/forum/index.php/topic,4460.msg22284.html#msg22284 . |

In the Java distributions of Innotek and the unofficial 1.5 versions I can find in the bin directory the file jpeg.dll. However in all 1.6 releases this file is called jjpeg.dll, is this by accident or on purpose? Or are we talking about total different things? Because some packages can't save jpeg files with version 1.6(Ga,GA2,GA3) and can with the Innotek 1.42something. So I suspect that those packages are looking for the jpeg.dll and can't find that name in the bin directory with the result that nothing happens, in one case I got filenames but with 0 bytes. If its just renaming the file this could be solved very quick without lots of developer time. |

When I run the this: L:\Java6\bin>java.exe -server result is: Error occurred during initialization of VM Could not reserve enough space for object heap Could not create the Java virtual machine. It doesn't help specifying any app I have 1.6GB free mem, so that is not the problem. |

Installed latest Odin and have 3 separate directories for JAVA GA1, GA2 and GA3. Latest LIBC and GCC installed. ImageJ is running just fine with Java GA1. With Java GA2 it does start, but I don't have a menu bar. In Java GA3 it crashes at startup. I did change memory from 1024 to 512, because I thought it was a memory thing. So the only thing I change in this setup is JAVA, the rest of the setup remains the same, no changes there. |

| #118 | SMP: mprotect-based membars don't work well | general | 1.6.0-b22 WSE | Next | task | new | 2011-06-16 | 2012-02-07 | dmik | ||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||||

Investigation within #96 has shown that the newer mprotect-based membar technique used in recent Java versions doesn't work well on OS/2 under the SMP kernel for some reason. The new technique was added to Java to reduce the overhead of calling membar instructions after each state transition, see this Java bug record http://bugs.sun.com/bugdatabase/view_bug.do?bug_id=5075546 for more information. The main idea of the new technique is to use a special page where each thread has its own word it writes to when it changes its state. The VM dispatcher thread changes the memory protection flags of this page to READONLY when it wants to be sure about the thread state after some change and then immediately switches it back to READWRITE which (as I understand) should cause the CPU to flush caches and make sure all cores see the same values of the thread state variables. As it is sometimes possible that this memory protection change happens when one of the threads is writing to the page, an access violation exception may be thrown. This exception needs to be handled gracefully by waiting until the VM thread restores the READWRITE protection mode and retrying the operation. And this is how it is done in Java. When running under the SMP kernel on OS/2, this technique usually works. However, sometimes retrying the write operation to this special serialize page after restoring the READWRITE mode causes corruption of some registers (that are normally saved upon an exception and should be restored if the exception handler continues execution) so that weird (random) memory locations get written afterwards and/or random functions get called which eventually leads to an application crash due to another access memory violation, bad stack condition and so on. This ticket is to attempt to solve the mentioned issues. Note that in r297 the workaround from #96 has been applied that forces the -XX:+UseMembar? option to all JVM invocations. |

It is standard in OS/2 to use RMB for drag and resize operations, but RMB doesn't work for this in GUI apps. (It works with LMB - but we do not want that on OS/2) Simple testcase is the included demo Font2DTest. |

Java 6 still feels a quite a bit slow (in some areas). To demonstrate it, I used Jeti/2, measuring time from starting it and until GUI is up and roster and 4 MUCs (2 on local server 2 on remote) are populated. All tests done from same client PC, only the loaded Java versions are different.
Time to start Jeti/2 until roster and 4 MUC are filled Java 1.41 | Java 1.42 | Java 1.50 | Java 1.60 |
(A lot more tests was actually done - these are the best results) 1) Java 1.41 loads in 9 secs in almost every test done. 2) Between 15-25 secs in mosts test. Not easy to see any specific
3) Has seems to have some timing issues with sockets / DNS - hang
4) Lots of tests were over 1 minut to load. Splash screen is
There seems to be room for improvement - although it may be hard to compete with our native 1.41 |

Java includes a dependence on ftp://ftp.netlabs.org/pub/gcc/gcc4core.wpi. This can result in multiple installs of these DLLs, wasted bandwidth downloading them yet again for very little benefit. Simple solution is to set GCCOPT='-static-libgcc' This will statically link the couple of small functions that may be needed. |

Java never starts VM execution on the main thread of the process. It instead fires off a new thread (right after performing basic parsing of command line arguments) and starts the VM there. The main thread then waits indefinitely for this new thread to terminate and once terminated, it returns from main(). This has one strange effect. Java uses many additional DLLs for implementing native methods and for providing utility functions and these DLLs often use C++ classes. These classes have static objects that get created at program startup and destroyed at program termination. These objects sometimes use various JVM calls. The thing is that the destruction of static objects always happens on the main thread, after all other threads of the process have been stopped (at least this is the case for VAC/GCC on OS/2 where such destruction either takes place at DLL termination time (GCC) or during DosExitList? processing (VAC)). So, in case of static objects in helper Java DLLs, their destruction happens after the JVM has been exited and therefore calling it will simply crash (becaus most internal structures have been destroyed by the exit routine). This in particular happens with AWT native methods which are implemented with the help of C++ classes on Windows (and therefore on OS/2). A particular example is the static GDIHashable AwtPen::cache object (see awt_Pen.cpp). Upon destruction, it frees memory and in the debug build the free routine collects some extra information and uses the JVM monitor primitive to serialize access to its internal structures containing this information. But this primitive may not function when JVM is shut down and therefore the application crashes. |
