If I open a document it will always show the document open dialog in the executable directory, make sure it remembers the last directory the user navigated too

All icons should be replaced, we will give the job to Wizzard to create some icons.

Implement printing support for documents

There are PDF documents with comments in it, those don't work with Acrobat on OS/2 so far. Lucide does obviously support it somehow, at least I can see some nice flags in the document but the comment itself are not shown.

There should be context-sensitive help available for Lucide. Probably we should talk to Christian Langanke about how to implement that properly.

I asked Ulrich Möller about the license, Poppler is GPL but I would like to release Lucide itself as LGPL/CDDL dual-license if possible.

It would be convenient to have a 'recently opened' files history, like Acrobat Reader has. Amazingly enough, I use that quite a lot ;)

First of all my congratulations to the very good idea of a generic document viewer. It looks really promising. For developers the plugin API needs to be documented but I guess this is planned already.

I just had a quick look at the plugin sources of the PDF reader because it takes quite long to open a PDF file with many pages.

The Plug-in API seems to support only loading a file as a whole with all pages. This might not be possible for large documents (e.g. big multipage images or complex PDFs) due to system memory constraints. Also it forces the user to wait unecessarily long time and finally the user might not even want to have a look at all pages of the document.

As a workaround plugins could defer loading pages to view during rendering but this is obviously not intended as there is no way to report read errors.

I'd suggest to either enhance the loadFile function or introduce some kind of page switching function with a return code that allows plugins to load a document page on demand. This might be also helpful for supporting document streaming from an URL if this is planned sometime. If memory gets low, the plugin could drop pages from memory if not needed to reduce memory footprint.

Open the files in "read" mode, so they can also be accessed by other programs and it is allowed to write the file while it is already opened by Lucide. If the file has changed it has to be re-read! This is needed to use it as PDF-Viewer when someone creates PDF files with VTEX/2 (LaTeX).

You have to compare the last saved timestamp with the current timestamp when the Lucide window will be activated. If you have a background thread that will check the timestamps in the background this would be an option too. Look at the GSView source, which is supporting this feature since ages.

The document window is not redrawn correctly when opening a new file. Probably not all parts are invalidated.

Lucide does not show the dots in the graph in my pdf file(which I will gladly send to you). It displays correctly in Acrobat and in ghostview.

Comment from a beta-tester:

Often when I get a pdf, depending on the subject, I prefer to print it. Back problems make online study a painful experience. What really bugs me is the lack of an option to print it on both sides of the paper. With a regular text document, I can do this with Wordperfect... Even works on dot matrix printer, which I prefer. To me, that feature would be a real Adobe buster.

It seems that the fontscache is initialized each time Lucide is invoked. This also overwrites the fontscache that may have been generated by other programs like The Gimp installer.

This is bad for two reasons:

1) performance (!) 2) Lucide drops fonts that The Gimp did add (for example from other fontdirectories)

This has been reproduced on two systems.

Each time you try to load a PDF-file in a new LUCIDE window it takes an awful lot of time to load the document. But if you keep on loading PDf's in the same LUCIDE instance which was once already opened by a PDF, the PDF documents are opening extremely fast.

Probably this is caused by each time reading/creating the fonts.cache-1 file in C:\PSFONTS each time a PDF is opened in a new LUCIDE window.

Furthermore the fonts.cache-1 file is also created by Alex Taylor's GIMP installation routine. I have noticed that starting HOBLink X11 and The GIMP some fonts from C:\PSFONTS were not available anymore when LUCIDE was run before. I got them back by running the font-script delivered by ALEX TAYLORS GIMP package. Conclusion: fonts.cache-1 created by Lucide is not the same as the one created by The GIMP installation routine. Most probably LUCIDE will cause the same trouble with XFree86/2 .

Solution? LUCIDE must check if there is a FONTS.CACHE-1 file already present. Furthermore FONTS.CACHE-1 files should be independent from the program they were created by, or Lucide should create it's own cachefile (with an unique name)

When Lucide is started from the root directory of a drive, its window shortly opens, closes again and the program terminates.

Workaround: Start Lucide from a subdirectory.

At present, there is no differentiation between the white document page and the white document window background. If the document window background could be changed to gray, the boundaries of the document would be clearly visible.

How To Reproduce:

Open a PDF file, make the navigation pane on the left hand side visible, double click somewhere in the navigation pane where there is no text

When rendering a document page certain errors could arise in the plugin (e.g. out-of-memory, file no longer accessible, ...).

It is so far not possible for a plugin to report these errors to the Lucide core. Thus the user has no idea what went wrong. He/she probably just sees an empty page (or crap).

Proposal: Apply the same error reporting scheme used for loadFile() to renderToPixbuf() and renderToPS(). (boolean returned, error message via SOMMalloc)

I have noted on DjVU Zone that when a file is a pure DjVu? file, the Lucide displays it properly. However, there are numerous links which point to index.html files. They hand off immediately to files named index.djvu. Lucide runs and shows the pages in the bookmarks panel, but nothing ever shows in the document panel. When this happens Lucide either becomes unresponsive and I must CTRL+ESC to close it in the Window List or Lucide disappears all by itself.

The application start up okay. I can navigate through the menus. Howeve, after clicking Document-Open and then selecting [PDF or JPG file] followed by OK, the application exits.

There are no error messages and no POPUPLOG.OS2 file. This is the same for all versions of LUCIDE; that is, v1.0, v1.1 and v2.0.

Since I have a couple of compilers, it's possible that my SOM paths and files are missing or nonstandard. What SOM files and what SOM paths are required by LUCIDE? Currently, I have tried to separate the SOM stuff from Visualage C++ v3.09; from the Warp Toolkit v4.52; and from the eCS v1.1 base into their appropriate sections.

That is the only thing I can think of that might be causing the problem.

Is there a debug mode for LUCIDE?

Sorry, but I'm kind of stuck!

The main menu has underscores to show the accelerator keys, but the drop down sub-menus do not. This is non-standard.

• The Zoom Selection combobox is not wide enough to see the text - you get "Fit in Wind" rather than "Fit in Window".
• The Zoom Selection does not change immediately when using the Arrow Keys - you have to press Enter after cursoring. It changes immediately when using the mouse.
• The drop down list is annoyingly short. Why limit yourself to 5 lines?
• Where is the Zoom tool that on Acrobat allows you to just click the mouse to zoom in or Control-click to zoom out?

Scrolling seems very erratic. At no time have I been able to get the scroll bars to do anything, either by dragging or by clicking on the Up/Down? buttons. Sometimes the PgUp/PgDn? keys will work, but I keep finding the program in a state where these do nothing either and nor do Lucide's own forward/backward buttons.

Aha! This seems to happen when I select View -> Continuous. With this selected, even double-clicking on the pages in the navigation pane does nothing either; nor does View -> Next Page.

In the german version the menu 'Fenster' shows the some accelerator (F11) for topic 'Maximized view' and 'Vollbild' Maximized view still has to be translated.

In the about dialog, it is possible to jump with the tab key to the text field.

The German language file is missing in the entry for the new menu item "Maximized view". Thus 2 identical menu items named "Vollbild F11" were shown.

I have attached an updated language file that fixes this. Just unzip the file into the Lucide installation directory.

PMView offers a feature that lets you load the next file of a supported file format that resides in the same directory as the currently loaded file. By pressing the plus and minus keys, you can subsequently step through all images in a directory. Very useful for, e.g., viewing digital photographs. Such a feature would greatly enhance Lucide's usability.

Some documents show weird symbols for 'µ' (micro) and '°' (degree). Open attached file tea5768hl.pdf and look at the last column in table "QUICK REFERENCE DATA" (page 4).

When I point to a file that lives on an RSJ mounted CD drive like Z:, the pdf file does not load in Lucide. Lucide gives the error:

Failed to load document (error 3) "Z:\tm2354\a.pdf"

When this file a.pdf is copied to a harddrive, LUCIDE loads it fine.

So far we just create an icon & folders for Lucide, it would be nice if it would associate Acrobat Documents as well with the program object. Also, there should be an optional question if one wants to have Lucide as default PDF viewer. That should be an option, not a default however :-)

The attached file contains a barcode, built from an embedded font. Lucide doesn't show it.

The lucide.exe should really have a sequence to provide access to its own DLLs without the necessity of making an entry in CONFIG.SYS or using something like the RUN!.EXE.

I am not a C programmer, so I can't really put in the code.

I have tried both jpeg plugin and gbm and the effect is the same, lucide quits on loading the file.

I know that in gbm 32 bit jpeg files are not supported, but the should be some message.

I have problem with the Symbol font used by Coplot (a Java drawing prog) in its PDF files (an example is attached). These PDFs render just fine with Gview/Gscript?, but in Lucide all characters from Symbol look blocky and pixellated. The rendering of Symbol characters produced from (eg) Latex seem OK

[ eComStation Developer Group ] I've just had a look at the source .lng file for Lucide translation.

It's short, it's plain text, it seems to be structured... but is NOT. It's easy to produce a translation for Lucide, but not so easy to produce a good one (perhaps some defects are inherited from NewView? here?). What's wrong?

BTW, this is not intended to be a pun against Eugene Romanenko, but a constructive criticism that may be used by developers pf NLV-enabled apps to make translators' lives easier.

-Resource strings are split into groups starting with 'MENU_', 'TBHINT_' and the like. This is good, but strings within groups are hardly sorted, so you can't relate them to each other adequately (as you would if they resembled menu nesting, group boxes, etc. item order).

For example, to choose adequate mnemonics for user menus it is most convenient to have them in nested lists, ordered so that items in the list match the order in which they appear on the user menu. This happens most of the time, except that menu subgroups are shuffled around, or perhaps you are translating 'document' menu items and you suddenly find a subgroup from 'view'...

-Strings from each group can be related to strings in other groups. An obvious example is items-toolbar hint pairs. While it is very sensible to group menu items, it makes a little less sense to group hints, except perhaps for length comparison.

Parhaps a good solution would be a 2-column table for each app element (such as the user menu or dialog boxes) ordered by item (first column), with item-hint couples in each row. Of course, I mean user-editable columns; obviously there should be column for IDs, etc...

The open file dialog finds all pdf files in directory except those that have more than one dot in the file name.

This *might* be an OS/2 limitation on the open file box though. I am not certain.

Spin boxes for printing appear to allow reverse order but printing is still done in ascending page number sequence.

Suggest that spin box entries be honoured by Lucide so pages can be printed in descending order.

Hi.

Another printing aspect noticed, when I print multiple pages.

1. printing progress dialog appears rapid until last page number, so last page appears to take soooo long.
2. Printing impacts my CPU usage (System Resources 4.00 on OS/2 shows 100% while printing progress dialog is in view.

Using Lucide on eCS 1.2

Displayed a multi-layer pdf, which showed a second graphic when using GSView.

I infer that the main layer was supposed to be transparent, as the hidden graphic flashed up first on a blank layout, in its correct position, then "disappeared" when the rest of the pdf was displayed.

I can fwd the pdf if required.

I just installed the beta 4. I tried to print a 35 page pdf. Both times I tried it got into the low teens on page count and the following SYS3175 occured. The print was very slow 4-5 minutes from starting the print till the crash. I can send the file if it would be helpful. I can get a trap dump if that would be helpful.

If you select a file to print, remember the printer someone chooses for the rest of the session. Now it always selects the default printer.

It would be desirable to be able to select columns for copy & paste. Right now, text is selected per line, and ignores possible layout of the document.

The new Beta4 that comes with eCS 2.0 Beta 3 does not remember the single/continuous page setting from session to session.

While I dislike the idea of MDI, I would vote for a "tabbed" interface to allow multiple documents to be opened at the same time. The "Find" function should have an option to search all tabs.
